Staying Safe from Holiday Scams
The holiday season should be full of celebration, not stress. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage of increased shopping, travel, loneliness, and charitable giving this time of year. Here are a few common holiday scams and how to protect yourself.
Common Holiday Scams
1. Fake Online Stores
Scammers often create websites that look like real retailers but offer deals that are "too good to be true." After you pay, the item never arrives, and your card information may be compromised. Use Secure Retailers: Look for "https" and verify the site's reputation through reviews and ratings prior to making a purchase. Remember, if it is too good to be true, it probably is!
2. Delivery Notice Scams
Phishing texts and emails might claim a package is delayed or needs verification. Clicking these links can lead to malware or fake login pages designed to steal your information. Go Straight to the Source: Don't click links in unsolicited emails or texts. Visit the retailer or shipper's official website.
3. Charity Scams
Fraudulent charities often appear during the holiday season. Scammers may pressure you to donate immediately by using gift cards or wire transfers while using names similar to real nonprofits. Research Charities: Check them through trusted directories before donating.
4. Holiday Job Scams
Seasonal job listings may promise fast pay but request personal information or upfront fees. A legitimate employer will never ask for money to apply, or have you buy your own equipment. Be Cautious with Job Offers: Avoid listings that request personal information or payments early.
To ensure you're protecting yourself year-round against fraud and scams, never give out personal information such as:
- Online Banking Credentials
- 2-Factor Authentication Codes
- Social Security Number
- Account Number
